Total waste of money September 28, 2008 I wish I had read these reviews first....however my trusty cylinder mower broke (actually, I cut through the lead)and I had been told hover mowers were good for small gardens, so I did a quick search and bought this. Big mistake! It's one handed operation but you have to use both hands as it's so heavy. It's really hard work - if you want huge biceps then perhaps it's an option. Bottom line is it doesn't cut the grass - I've tried both settings and neither is satisfactory. It's also hopeless for uneven lawn. Maybe it would work as a vacuum cleaner???
Contrary to popular opinion July 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having seen the negative comments here, I was lucky enough to be able to borrow one to test.
It worked perfectly well on my relatively small lawns, even though they are not particularly flat.
Thus encouraged I bought one and am still completely satisfied with it.
I haven't tried using it on wet grass but, in my view, it would be an exceptional lawn mower that could cope with such conditions.
Avoid this at all costs. Mower can only be pushed forwards !! July 21, 2008 I like the flymo brand, and the design of their products always looks very good. Unfortunately this mower is just too heavy and has the hover properties of a brick on a piece of string.
The instructions explain (through omission, in a diagram) that you can only push this mower forwards, you can't pull it back otherwise the silver coloured Vacuum nozzle at the back (about 4cm off the ground) catches in the grass that the mower has just flattened. You can't even lift the mower to pull it back as it's not balanced and tends to tip forwards spilling grass cuttings everywhere.
Only ever walking forwards may not be a problem for large right angled lawns if you carefully plan your route, but If you have a small garden, or areas where you need to reverse this means walking around in a circle, tangling yourself with the lead. (Imagine just walking forwards with an upright vacuum cleaner in your home and having to lift every time you need to go backwards, that's basically the problem).
As if that was not enough...the bayonet fitting used to hold the blade wheel in place is a pain to replace (after cleaning) as you can't stop the motor shaft from revolving when you are trying to lock it in place.
I returned mine after I used it a couple of times. Nice idea, but I think this went straight from the drawing board to the store shelf without prototyping, and testing. I wouldn't even give this 1 star if I had the option as it's not really usable as a lawnmower unfortunately.
Cheap, but cheap for a reason.
Useless Mower!! July 20, 2008 I would have given this mower zero stars if I could. We actually have a 'postage sized' front lawn and it still takes about half an hour to cut using this mower!! You need to 'hoover' over the same spot about 6 times to actually get the grass cut. As you only use one hand to push it you end up with cramp in that arm! Every now and then it spits huge lumps of grass out from underneath. It certainly doesn't hover! On Wednesday we took it to the rubbish dump and are now going out to buy a new mower.
Don't buy this. You'll regret it. June 15, 2008 What a heap of junk. Clearly the "designers" have never tried to mow with it. It does a very poor job of cutting grass. The blades fly off at the slightest excuse, and the whole thing tips over backwards, especially if you try to move it backwards. At which point, the grass box falls off and empties its contents.
I wrote to Flymo and complained about the atrocious design. Their response was that "it is not our responsibility" I won't buy Flymo again.
