5 out of 5 stars Warning!   May 31, 2007

Warning : may cause an adverse reaction in people without a well developed sense of humour.

This is a seriously funny book! The humour varies in the book from slapstick, through to self deprecating, subtle double entendres to sophisticated witticisms.

To me that is where the joy of the book is but I guess to others that can be the problem. You WILL miss some of the funnies first time round and if you do my advice is read it again...it will be like reading a different book when you are tuned into the authors wavelength. My 66 year old mother, 40 year old husband and 14 year old daughter have all read the book and loved it. All have retold funny parts to the book that others have missed. All have described the theme of the book as something different. I think it's because the book isn't written to some kind of formula as many books are nowadays so they can be mass marketed to a specific audience. Here the author seems to have written whatever he likes, digressing here and there, bringing in different themes and topics, all seen in an irreverent and witty way, and for me that makes Shakespeare My Butt a breath of fresh air. I don't know what shelf you'd find this on in a bookshop...it's not easy to categorise. All I know is that it fully deserves 5 stars! (Be warned it is irreverent in places)

While searching for something to read to take with me on my recent holiday to England, I thought I'd search on amazon for an easy reading book by a British author. The synopsis of this book sounded ideal. In brief, it's an eclectic mix of the delightfully quirky author's own life adventures weaved together as he shares with the reader his travels around some of the weirdly named places in Britain with his new Labrador puppy.

The author has a wonderful way of seeing the humorous side to almost everything..... from something as simple as looking after a goldfish, to more complex matters such as sending text messages on his mobile phone. John's even delved into dog psychology by writing a list he calls `The Ten Commandments of Dog', so that his dog (Barney) can tell other humans the ten most important ways to treat him if John's away. It's brilliantly funny. There's even a challenge inside the front cover by The Review Centre to not laugh out loud when reading it - I failed the challenge before I'd even finished reading the first chapter!

Well done John, a first-class and VERY funny book - I'll be taking it with me next time I visit England again (maybe to some of those funny named places in his book!!).

If you liked 'Marley and Me' - you will LOVE 'Shakespeare My Butt!'
If you thought Marley was cute - you will think Barney is adorable
If the other book made you giggle - this will have you belly laughing
If you gave Marley and Me 5 stars - you'll want to give this book 10
Fantastic!

I read the whole book with a smile on my face. Hilariously familiar, with many moments that made me laugh out loud. Extremely readable.

Tails Up For John,This could be about owning a dog for the first time and the joys of bonding with mans best friend. But this is better than any serious book on dogs.John talks about "Poop discharging incidents" "Turds in bed" "Sore Bum" Life of being a British sailor,This book is all over the place This is a good thing so you never get bored one minute your in reading about being in Poland the next Barney The Dog is ripping up stuff or just leaving turds in someone's bed. 5 Paws up from this rabid Aussie wombat.Good on ya about time someone did something like this and not recomended to people without a sense of humour or politians.
