Excellent writing, a fine eye for detail, and very witty! April 23, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Mole is an excellent writer with a fine eye for detail and a very nice sense of humor. His observations capture the essence of Greek village culture with very funny descriptions of the locals, and particularly their conversations. He keys in on the rampant individuality of the Greeks in a warm-hearted way. He is really good at writing dialogue, athough with the normal problem of trying to convey Greeks speaking broken English and Anglos speaking very broken Greek. But he does manage to pull it off! A light-hearted, funny journey through Greek village life!
It's too Greek for me... December 13, 2006 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this book because we holiday on a Greek island each year so it was a bit like looking through old holiday snaps for me. It is a great idea and it is filled with potentially funny anecdotes and stories, but I just think that they're not told very well and the prose is a bit clunky. There's a definite lack of comic timing - it is, after all, the way you tell 'em. It's hard to get in to this book and Mole seems to lampoon the islanders more than he does himself. Also there's an uneasy feeling throughout the book of the author trying to recreate some sort of nostalgic rural idyll that never really existed except in the minds of tourists like himself. This is a pleasant enough holiday read, but don't expect anything more.
Hoping to buy a Greek holiday home? Read this:- October 5, 2005 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Greek village life through the eyes of a sympathetic foreigner -very realistic, very funny and very evocative of the time. As someone who lived in that area at that time (but who doesn't know Mr. Mole), I give him top marks for an entertaining read.

What can I say This is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. This book is a must for all Greekophiles, like myself, it combines humour of the highest degree, especially that mad dog, along with a fleeting glance at the life in a village atmosphere, it really is a must to read. Best wishes Phil Tittensor
Crying with laughter! May 17, 2005 26 out of 26 found this review helpful
As lovers of Greece, we try to find at least one book about the country every time we visit. Last summer we took this book and have never cried so much - with laughter! We have many Greek friends and they will not mind us saying that the eccentricity of the village people is all true, but told with such love, warmth and respect. The Joke is on the author and he is not afraid to share his stupidity with the reader. Our daughters had great empathy with his children; they too have had to experience the fall out from some of their parents stranger efforts to fit in with the community. We cannot recommend this book enough BUT be warned! you get very funny looks from others on beaches, in tavernas and planes as you are helpless with laughter, tears pouring down your face! Strange lot these tourists!
