I can't believe the two reveiwers below weren't charmed by Peter Kerr's newest book! If you've read all his previous books about his life in Mallorca then you'll definately want to read this! it's a lovely book following the Kerr family back to their roots in Scotland and finding things very different from how they left it. Once again Kerr's humour and charm really bring out the best in the people and places he writes about.

What a dreadful book! I really wasted my money buying this one. The story of the author's return to Scotland seems to be an exercise in putting any old words on paper to make money eg 'I've written a few other books which have been successful so people will obviously buy anything I write.' Well don't bother with this book - descriptions of Edinburgh and local restaurant/pubs do not have the same romance attached as do those of Mallorca. Who wants to read about this dreary old country when they could read of the Mediterranean life instead? I enjoyed the previous books in this series, but 'From Paella to Porridge' is boring drivel - avoid it at all costs.

The title rather gives the game away even before you start as Peter and his family finally end their Mallorcan adventure. Having read the previous books covering the Kerr's life on the Balearics I found this latest edition rather disappointing and far less interesting. Past editions successfully evoked the feeling of the people and places that Peter experienced and I didn't feel that this was replicated with his descriptions of their return to Scotland. At times the writing appeared somewhat laboured with passages seemingly added to fill space.
As a frequent vistitor to Mallorca I felt a great afinity towards Peter's previous work and so in fairness that may have influenced my view on this latest chapter.
If, like me, you read his earlier work then you will probably want to read this latest offering to see how the transition works out but as for future books.....I'm not so sure.
