5 out of 5 stars Interesting, informative and warm.   April 9, 2008

Anyone who works with, lives with, and cares about dogs will enjoy and learn from this book. It is informative, entertaining, and real in that the author does not pretend to have always got everything right. It has humility and humour, and a great deal of wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book - for all dog owners   March 25, 2008

Rarely have I come across such an easy to read and friendly book. This advice is written for all dog owners - it is not pompous or done in a talking down manner. I found the book easy to read and informative. As the vast majority of people do not study dog behaviour, this is an insight into just that. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand their dog or who is a dog lover to start with. The illustrations are delightful. I found this book hard to put down.

This is a must for all dog owners and dog lovers out there.

2 out of 5 stars On the Right Track but Lacking in Substance.   March 24, 2008

As a student of dog psychology I have read widely on the subject of dog whispering, and, in my opinion, communicating with dogs in a way that actually means something to them rather than in truncated human terms is the most enlightened way to share our lives with animals that deserve both our respect and calm, consistent leadership. Graeme Sims clearly shares this ethos, but in his book, any real dog whispering is disappointingly scant, perhaps highlighting the gulf between dog training (Sims is a fantastic trainer by all accounts), and dog psychology. He correctly asserts that dog whispering is a holistic approach but rarely exhibits consistent, holistic leadership in this book, (being bitten on the nose after treading on a dog's foot springs to mind).
I am very much in favour of being as gentle as possible with dogs; leadership does not have to entail aggression after all, but Sims just doesn't get any substantial guidance across to the reader and his information on wild wolves is incorrect. Sims' dogs are in the best possible environment; plenty of mental stimulation and tons of exercise and as such his dogs will be well balanced but there is very little substantive guidance for people who need help in rehabilitating dogs that are not working or demonstartion animals.
Try Cesar Millan for inspiring, incisive and holistic dog whispering.
