narrow dog to carcasonne September 25, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I wouldn't normally take the time to write a review of anything, but this book is so good I felt I had to! It's such an entertaining read and made me laugh out loud so many times. You don't have to know about narrowboats and although I own one (part of the attraction for buying the book) it wasn't technical or specialised in any way - just a thoroughly great read that's being passed around family members as we speak!!
Impressed September 12, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
One of the few books I've read this year to actually make me want to have joined Terry, Monica & Jim on their voyage...even across the Channel!
In response to "Unimpressed" below, I can only say: if the punctuation spoiled your enjoyment, then you missed the humour and storytelling ability and...have you never read Kerouac?
Looking forward to the Indian River follow up in 2008 - keep writing, Terry!

Peculiar punctuation distracts from the text. In other hands the story could have been interesting.
Sharing My Bed September 4, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Narrow dog was a joy, so was the book! Every night I shared my bed with Terry Monnie and Jim, I lived every minute, felt every ripple of the journey and got drunk without drinking, what a flavoursome, delightful, journey - so France is full of wonderful characters! Read it and feel it, you'll love it!
Narrow Dog to Indian River is on my 'got to get it' list - can hardly wait!
witty and erudite August 15, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The author comes over as a stereotype grumpy old fart from time to time; then you realise it's just a set-up. His supposed incompetence and intolerance are just ploys to set up good gags. And they are good gags. His drawing of his main characters is brilliant. From the hero of the book: Jim they whippet, to long suffering wife and ex sargeant-major, all are believable and 3-D. A great read (all in one go if you have time), it'll have you sniggering and snorting without actually telling any jokes.
