The first ever book I want to read again immediately! September 26, 2005 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I took this book on holiday with me and had to ration the number of pages I read each day - otherwise I would have finished it on the first day. It combines adventure and humour absolutely brilliantly. I frequently laughed out loud - especially with the descriptions of some of the idiosyncratic behaviour of the French. With some of Bill Bryson's travel books, I have always felt that the narrative and humour begin to trail off in the last few chapters. With this book, however, the pace kept up to the very end. I hope the Darlingtons and Jim the whippet go on another adventure very soon so that we can have a sequel. Two questions are unanswered: 1) How did they get back from southern France?; 2) why was there no mention of being filmed for the TV programme 'Waterworld' (I seem to recall watching clips of them during their crossing of the English Channel).
Brilliant, quirky read September 19, 2005 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is an excellent book, written in a unique style that takes just a little getting used to but once done makes you feel like you're on the trip with them. The author has a bizarre sense of humour and describes situations so well that you form great visual images throughout. Your attention is held by the wonderfully zany and often surreal humour, I'd love to meet this guy, it was a joy to spend time with him, even if only on the pages of the book and as for Sheem, Love that wee pet!! Read this, it is delightful! and all credit to these brave, yet blessedly down to earth adventurers.
Hilarious, moving and exciting. June 24, 2005 25 out of 28 found this review helpful
Hilarious, moving and exciting. The author has a wicked eye for the small details that make you laugh - a dry observational sense of humour. A British Bill Bryson perhaps although personally I found him funnier. It is very well-written and reads like a really good novel rather than a travel book. In fact it is unlike anything I have read before - a unique voice. In addition, of course, the fact that the story is true is amazing - apparently these old guys and their dog actually drove their canal boat across the channel and down to the South of France!!!
jim conquers all June 12, 2005 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
What a thoroughly entertaining book about the trials and tribulations of taking Phyliss May to Carcassonne. I first learned of this trip by watching Waterworld and was so very pleased to hear there was to be a book. What staying power Mr and Mrs Darlington had i know i certainly would have felt like giving up. Terry's little 'off' comments about people along the way were very amusing and the book brought lots of chuckles. Well done both and all the best for Carcassonne and don't forget Jims scratchings that poor dog certainly deserves them. Would recommend this book to friends and family who enjoy a lighthearted read.
