I had this bought for me for Christmas, and by Christmas evening I had finished it. It was that good, I couldn't put it down.
I have read nearly all of the reviews on this page about the book, and can't believe some people gave it two, or in one case, one star! One person said it promoted animal cruelty! I do not think that is the case, and cannot recall at any point in this book there being a case of 'animal cruelty'. It's about a couple who buy a puppy and its life with said couple as they have children, move house, change jobs, the usual family stuff.
The author John Grogan is a journalist, and I think this makes it a very well written book. It's funny, heartwrenching in places. You can't really read this in public because YOU WILL CRY.
One reviewer in America said that this had a 'narrow appeal: it can only appeal to people with dogs, or who have had dogs, or anyone who has ever wanted a dog'. That's a lot of people. And I think it just about sums up the book, as it can appeal to so many people.

There really are no words to describe how touching this true story is. So I'm just going to say this: you will laugh and you will cry at this. Not only does it simmer with the joy of life that animals such as dogs can give us, it is also well written and your eyes just slide across the pages. Quite what the sole 1-star rater was getting at is lost on me. Animal abuse? Were they reading a different book perchance?
The first book to make me cry December 9, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is an amazing story of one dogs journey through life . as a thorough dog lover and owner i was amazed to find a book with such a dog the same to mine, i thought it would never happen. so when my freind handed this to me in the aisle at tesco's i thought i would give it a try ! this is a beautiful true story about one mans life with his loopey labrador it goes through his puppy hood and his adolescent stage with flying colours but when your in his adult hood please dog owners do not have your dog at your feet , as i did .when marley died my dog saw me sniffling and tried to jump on my lap this was a difficult uncomfartable position as he is a St bernard but you will need a big box of kleenex with you ! five out of five well done Marley !
Happiest, yet saddest book all in one. December 7, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Oh how I love that dog! Not being a dog owner I wondered how I would fair with this book. You don't need to be a dog owner, just a human being with a heart, however prepare for it to be broken at the end. Kleenex at the ready for sure. Fantastic book. A pure celebration of a misguided mutts' life, through laughter and tears, a pure joy to read. God bless you Marley, you touched so many lives, mine included xx
Heart Warming and Heart Wrenching November 26, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book after seeing it recommended as it was outside of my 'normal' interests. This book is written from the heart and makes you laugh and cry. Many people will be able to empathise with what he's gone through both good and bad and there were certainly flashes of my own dog in here. Who would think that dog ownership could be interesting but it is and I challenge anyone to remain dry eyed at the inevitable outcome in this book. Buy it - it touches your heart !
