Mandatory reading for new pet owners - wonderful reading for everyone! January 29, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
You'll laugh (out loud)! You'll cry! You'll want to send THAT dog to a place where the sun doesn't shine, and yet you'll always, always love him to bits!
This should be mandatory reading for any wannabe and first time pet owners, who still believe that all dogs are Lassies or Old Yeller. The truth is that few dogs are.
Grogan's biography of Marley the Dog and depiction of Marley's influence on the Grogan family is absolutely wonderful! However BEWARE - kleenex are necessary for the last chapters.
Louise.
Adorable read January 26, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I loved this book from beginning to end. It's written simply but beautifully and you can't help but fall in love with Marley, faults and all. He's just such a loveable creature and anybody who has owned a dog will relate to this book. When the rest of the world walks out, often your most loyal friend walks in. Your dog loves you no matter what you look like, no matter where you live or what you do for a living. Anybody who has loved and lost a dog will shed a few tears by the end of this book. I read a lot and often a few days after I've read a book I can't remember what the book was about. Not so with Marley and me. It's one of those life changing reads. Read it and pass it on!
Marley January 8, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'll be blunt, this is a great book. I read it over a couple of days after finally getting round to buying it, and it's so easy to grow to love Marley as much as the Grogans did. Looking back over some reviews, I noticed a review mentioning animal abuse and really I think that person has it all wrong, the only instances I can think of that she might be thinking of are when Marley had his choke collar and when John was training him not to jump up at people by kneeing him in the chest, which John was reluctant to do for fear of hurting him and only relented to do so when assured he wouldn't harm Marley, so if people can get animal abuse from that then I reckon there's something wrong with them, this man truly loved his dog. I loved reading about Marley's antics as a puppy and his first experience with snow and it was great that he didn't lose his playfulness as he got older. Marley is the ultimate example of how a relationship between a dog and his family should be, they just seemed to "get" each other. Definitely get this book. And a box of tissues, I was crying for about 15 minutes when I got to the end!
Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful! January 4, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a touching story of life with a dog that will make you laugh til you cry, and also just make you weep buckets as it tugs at your heart strings.
It captures the essence of John Grogan and his relationship with his wonderful and exuberant Marley.
This was recommended to me by my Mum, and I and my sisters are glad to have read it because it brought back memories of pets we had when we were children who brought us such pleasure and contributed to our wonderful childhoods.
This book is an honest account of how people make us who we are, how pets make us human, but how both enrich our lives.
I can't recommend this book enough.
Read this book! December 29, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
What a book. I laughed and I cried buckets. A brilliant, moving and honest account of family life with a challenging dog for which John Grogan should only be applauded. Those who accuse of animal abuse do not know what they're talking about. Please don't let this minority of people put you off.
I loved Marley and Me and am glad John Gorgan has told us this heartwarming story.
