I bought the book on the strength of the Dog Whisperer TV show and have to say that Cesar's philosophy is so simple that it is untrue. Humans have become so detached and confused about the way they view animals and dogs in particular that it is no wonder dogs develop phobias and other anxiety related problems. Cesar puts over clearly thought-out ideas in such a friendly and easy to understand way that it is recommended reading for any one who is interested in dogs, let alone anyone who owns one!
Cesar's Way March 24, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am not a dog owner but considering getting a dog - to be part of our family unit. We have many other animals so a dog would have to get on with other critters of all kinds. I wanted to learn how to be around a dog, how to consider choosing the right one for our lifestyle and I have found this book to be informative and very interesting. I have enjoyed this book enormously and will be passing it on to others. It is common sense - but in the busy life styles that we have, sometimes common sense gets forgotten.
Outdated, unethical and downright dangerous March 4, 2008 8 out of 41 found this review helpful
That's Cesar Milan and his views on dogs and dog training. Never has a theory been so over-used and under-proven as the Dominance myth. Based on flawed research, incorrectly interpreted and used as a panacea for every problem. If you want a shut down, ticking time bomb of a dog that you have to manage, and you're happy employing a sharp kick to the ribs, or a prong collar, then follow cesar milan and I'm sure you'll be very happy. Your dog won't be but that doesn't seem to matter, does it? The only thing he's right about is that dogs need exercise, both mental and physical and that they need rules and consistency - but that's hardly revolutionary, is it? If you want a dog with its own self control, that doesn't need you to constantly put it in its place or tell it to stop barking, then look at the really great dog people like Kay Lawrence or Jean Donaldson. Don't buy this - give your dog a break.
Excellent Read February 29, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This was a brilliant easy to read book. Ceasar has a natural ability to understand how dogs interact with each other and teaches us to talk dog. A must for all dog owners especially those 'dog lovers' who are in fact ruining their dogs life by treating them as humans.
Essential reading for dog owners January 30, 2008 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is quite an amazing book. It is not a training manual, but instead Cesar draws on many of his life experiences and uses case studies to give the reader an insight into dog psychology. It is very easy to read. The case studies make absolute sense, so you understand the way the dog is thinking and reacting. It has changed my whole approach to dogs - and some of the techniques work with my kids too! If you want to be a calmer more controlled dog owner while still enjoying a wonderful relationship with you dog then this book is an absolute must. No matter what age your dog is, it is never too late to implement Cesars techniques.
