Not the best book out there February 10, 2007 12 out of 20 found this review helpful
I would rate this book as 'better than nothing' when it comes to dog training, but there are far better books out there. I read this from the library and thought it was good, until I started reading her other books and had a horrible suspicion that this lady was not making total sense to me. Thankfully I discovered the brilliant 'The Culture Clash' by Jean Donaldson - far better than this.

If you do a little research, you will find that Fennell's methods (and others that accuse dogs of being 'dominant' for, well, behaving like dogs) have been widely discredited. You would be far better off buying The Complete Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training by Pamela Dennison or The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. Jan Fennell's theories are outdated, and in the wrong hands, could be dangerous.

I was a bit sceptical when I started to read this book, but I thought, what have I got to lose. I have a 8stone Briard who did not like other dogs - he actually threw me into a stationary car going after a dog - I am 5ft 1in and weigh the same as my dog, I was too scared to take him to dog training, the thought of walking into a room full of dogs was too scary. So I started to use the training from The Dog Listener. It was amazing, within 2 days my dog didn't bother me when I came home, he waited until I called him to me. I then went onto the food, same thing, all this without saying a word. He has stopped pulling and he has sat down on a very narrow pathway to let 2 dogs pass, infact the owner decided to stop and have a chat, her dogs were in my dogs face but he just sat there. All this within three weeks from a book. The only training that has worked effectively. Amazing. I would recommend this book 100 percent. Best buy ever for dog training.
An interesting insight into dogs June 9, 2006 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
As other reviewers have said, this book has many merits, and does provide some insights into dog behaviour. However, the "me, me, me" writing style of the author does become grating after a while. There are too many words spent extolling the virtues and triumphs of the author instead of getting into more detail about dogs!
I would like to have seen more variety in the dog behavioural issues tackled, more about reasons for particular dog behaviour, and particularly more detail about how to tackle different issues. Some of the issues were not fully described, it was not always clear why certain approaches were taken.
All that said, I was glad I read this book, just felt it could have been so much more.

This is an excellent book - it has transformed our dogs, and our lives! It is simple to follow and uses a non-violent approach. At last, a method that actually works.
