This book brought tears to my eyes; what a wonderful story. The author had four main bonds in his life; father, mother, sister and Martin his Dobermann. The latter was the one that brought him through his periods of lapsing from his endeavour not to drink. His responsibility to Martin won the day and it was only after Martin's death that he made a sacred vow never to drink again. I hope he still holds to that vow.

Very touching, it brought heavy tears to my eyes. I had to read it in one go. Simple and powerful. I really felt his attachment, care and loss for this dog - an enchanting book about an incredibly important bond and a very dear friend. Lovely.

This is a touching account of the salvation of a man at a low point in his life. The dog Martin provides a raison d'etre and the catalyst for the narrator to find salvation in every sense. The title was a surprise to me, referring not to the dog, but a religious context. Grittily realistic and unsentimental; not to be missed

Thomas Healy's memoir is a poignant testament to the dog's reputation for being man's best friend. An angry, lonely man whose life revolves around drinking and fighting, Healy's alcoholism is drawing him closer to the precepice. That is, until, on a whim, he buys a Dobermann puppy who he calls Martin. After a stumbling start, man and dog slowly develop a deep and unshakeable bond which in turn, sows the seed for his recovery. A touching book, it nevertheless manages to avoid mawkish sentimentality. His love for Martin is clearly evident in the personal sacrifices he makes for him; managing to stay off the bottle for long enough periods to enable him to give Martin the exercise he needs and pay for expensive veterinary treatmant. A slender volume, but a fitting tribute to Martin and the healing power of love.

Don't give this to anyone who is grieving for the loss of their dog without reading it first.
I found the book to be a self indulgent and sad account of an alcoholic's life and sexual conquests. I have no doubt that the author loved his dog 'Martin', but the most inspiring thing about it is the title, the content is shallow and lightweight.
The book is probably of more relevance to those interested in the devasting effects of alcoholism rather than those seeking solace following the loss of a beloved pet.
