5 out of 5 stars All Greek Is Good   January 21, 2008

I have emailed my appreciation to Mr Mole because this book is absolutely wonderful and transported me from the dour days of Devon back into the the Greece that my husband & I love so much.
John took me into his home and family: and shared his Greek experiences with a humour that I am at one with - even my husband laughed aloud reading this treasure of a book.
I only read it last week and I am re - reading it already as it has such an amazing feel-good factor to it. (I might add that I don't read that many books here - usually holidays are my time for reading !!)
This book will bring you smiles of laughter; tears; cameraderie and 'filoxenia' (Greek for welcome and stranger - as in visitor)but mostly leaves you with such a warm glow that returns a faith in human kind. Very well done John and thank you for your liitle drop sunshine !!!

5 out of 5 stars laugh out loud   August 11, 2007

An excellent example of this much hackneyed genre. Bright, funny prose with good characterisation. Clutch it as you set forth to view that house for sale in the sun, although it is set years ago, it has not dated at all and the content is still so relevant...recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Give Yourself a Laugh!   June 26, 2007

I really, really enjoyed this book. It isn't at all a book poking fun at the strange ways of funny foreigners - the joke is really on the author. Read John Mole's descriptions of his attempts to master the Greek language and you'll laugh out loud (especially the roof story!).

A book for anyone thinking of spending time in Greece to read before they go. A great summer read but, perhaps, even better to read whilst dreaming of better times in winter!

I absolutely adore this book. It is full of gentle humility; something that is hard to come by these days. It made me cry in the most suprising places, but they were tears of gratitude for the warmth of human nature. Mostly it made me smile and I was bereft when the book ended. I had become so involved with the people within the narative. John Mole is an intelligent writer with an honest approach. Never is he over sentimental, and yet, he still touches your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent writing, a fine eye for detail, and very witty!   April 23, 2007

Mole is an excellent writer with a fine eye for detail and a very nice sense of humor. His observations capture the essence of Greek village culture with very funny descriptions of the locals, and particularly their conversations. He keys in on the rampant individuality of the Greeks in a warm-hearted way. He is really good at writing dialogue, athough with the normal problem of trying to convey Greeks speaking broken English and Anglos speaking very broken Greek. But he does manage to pull it off! A light-hearted, funny journey through Greek village life!
