Lovesick is a novel based predominatly around passion, marriage, loyalty, and friendship. Lovesick opens with a small child badgering her aunt Phill about Martha whom she knows of, but does not know what happened to her. "something bad happened to Martha. What it was, Phil won't say". From this line, the mystery of Martha, this child and Phill unfolds. The tale begins with how Martha leaves Harry her lover of seven years, over their weekly Friday restaurant meeting. Over this meal, Martha realises the monotomy of her life and how Harry is no longer bringing the passion and danger she desires. She concludes this because of the way he eats his prawns. This is the begining, so Martha thinks, to one chaptert in her life. In reality it is only the beginning. She learns that however far away she removes herself from her life, she cannot remove herself entirely due to her friends lovers and family. The novel takes us on Martha's journey yo find passion and excitement, but as her life, and in turn those around her unravel, we find that the plot has a dangerous undertone to it and is not as perfect as it once seamed. Brampton tells you enough about each character to leave you to form your own opinions of them and therefore does not dictate to the reader. The story build's slowly leaving time for it to become intricate. It deals with the complexities and emotions of marriage bringing up the question how well do you really knoe someone?. The story entwines the emotions that are built through friendship and shows how damaging loyalty can be. This novel deals with complicated topics in an informed and enlightening way. Brampton shows you round Martha's life. You feel like a spectator watching a play that could have a thousand endings. Brampton develops an intriguing novel that finishes in the way true novels should, with an excellent ending that is totally unexpected. This is a novel for today that is an addictive read. Once you read about Martha from the first line, you identify with her need for something more in life. Brampton is an excellent writer. Who wtites with intelligence and integrity, dealing with a number of subjects that are still seen as taboos. It is a good and enjoyable read.
