2 out of 5 stars Three men, two stars   August 1, 2008
Three men in a boat is a fantastic read - the mix of comedy and adventure is perfect and it captures the Victorian era to a 't'.

I therefore had high hopes of the sequel, Three men on the bummel. Unfortunetly I can not praise it. The laugh aloud comedy element has given way to, at beast monologues you smile through, at worst, ones you want to skip. The adventure is in short supply and doesn't sit well with the comedy. A real shame.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel   July 22, 2008
I have read this book before i have actually read Three men in a Boat, and found it well written with a great sense of (British) humour. This tells well of the travels of three English gentlemen through the early 20th century Europe. If you like travelling and have experienced yourself some funny or hilarious situations, then this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars NO BUMMEL DEAL!   December 8, 2007

This is a very funny book for anyone who cycles, is thinking of cycling, or looking for reasons not to take it up! It contains many funny scenes including the maintenance of a cycle prior to a holiday in the Black Forest - reducing the bike to a pile of bits and pieces including a bummel in urgent need of a repair person! A wonderfully crafted comic treat which puts most contemporary comic writing to shame.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!BRILLIANT!BRIALLIANT! WHAT AN ENCORE!   December 3, 2004

What are you talking about, you people who say this is not as good as Three Men in a Boat? It is better. I believe I happened to read this one first. Maybe that has something to do with it. You have gotten bored, that's all. Have a rest and go back to him when you've forgotten all about him. The author, that is. But, by then, you'll have forgotten who to go back to, of course.
All the absurdity of life is paraded in front of us in this all-too-naormal account of aholiday. I mean, I need not stray from my own country to be confronted with such absurdities as seperate lanes for bikes and bipeds. I mean!
And are you not pleased to meet your friends again? The characters, I mean? I must say, they have kept me so hearily happy on many a bus-journey or suchlike trauma that I feel I have a lot to be thankful for to them.
Nothing makes me laugh. I am an iceprincess. Nothing except me, anyway. But, lo! O how wonderfully funniy it all is! Innocent and charming and a breath of breathable and fresh air after all I usually read, by decadent people. My bohemians.
So, leave it alone! And love it! It is loveable in the extreme.

2 out of 5 stars Poor sequel   November 4, 2003

This is a disappointingly poor sequel to Jerome's classic Three Men in a Boat. The three main characters, now 10 years older than in TMB, go on a bicycle ride through some parts of Germany and find themselves in the middle of all sorts of NOT funny events. The potential for making fun of the Germans (or letting the Germans make fun of the 3 Englishmen) on such a trip is most certainly there; still, it amounts to very little.

To be honest, I haven't managed to finish this pretty small volume - it is neither well written or entertaining. If you're a die-hard fan of Three Men in a Boat you might like this one - after all, he tries to imitate the kind of humour which maked the prequel so original and entertaining. I consider myself a die-hard fan of the original, however, and I most certainly did not enjoy this one.
