Adopt a Pet

We have a google map and list of rescue centres in the UK.

This is NOT a comprehensive list as yet, so please use your yellow pages or newspaper to find your local dog and / or cat home and give an animal a loving home. We can recommend this - we have done it ourselves and the love and affection you get back from a re homed dog is often the best experience you will ever have.

Have a look at our adopt a pet / dog directory and map.

Pet Acupuncture

Sam our 11 year dog has recently had acupuncture treatment to help injuries to his rear legs and back. Read more on his acupuncture treatment.

Doga

Doga - what on earth is doga - I accidentally typed this into google (a typo for dogs) and ended up seeing a lot of non UK websites. Well surprisingly it is dog related and if you want to find out more then go to our doga page.

Collies & Sheepdog

Tibby our collie sheepdog (retired)

In October 08 we had started to look after the farm sheep dog where we had recently moved to, basically it was just meant to be a week and it ended up being a permanent adoption!

The dog was an 8 year old female sheepdog "Tibby" and she had a terrible reputation around the farm steading for attacking other dogs, infact she had attacked our own two dogs and this involved a trip to the vet for Sam. So basically Tibby was not friendly to other dogs, or to people. A bit of a challenge to say the least.

For 8 months this meant that Tibby had to be exercised by herself, kept on the lead near any other dog and usually left in her shed (part of the farm steading) where she has lived since being a pup. This meant I felt guilty at leaving her in the shed while we went off to the beach and forest walks with our two dogs. Yet it was impossible to walk them together as Tibby always wanted to be dominant and attack my dogs - even when on a lead.

During the spring and summer I found that Tibby loved being in the garden with me, she was also fine with the chickens. So when I was working on our croft she got to be out with me. That meant I felt guilty that my two dogs were stuck inside when Tibby was enjoying being out in the open air with me.

Well to cut a long story short, a couple of weeks before Sam died he stopped running into the house when Tibby appeared (on the lead). And Tibby also stopped being aggressive to him. A couple of weeks after Sam died I decided to take Tibby and Charlie out on walks together - on the lead, and a few days later let them off the lead to walk. After a few close calls - and stern words given to Tibby they settled down and Charlie now tries to encourage Tibby to play! On Saturday the 8th August for the first time we went to the beach - Tibby and Charlie in the back of the car for the first time. We both had serious concerns that it would end in tears - however Tibby was as good as gold. Her behaviour has in the last 5 weeks improved every day and it is like a miracle has occurred.

Our two dogs on the beach together for the first time

Our two collies on the beach together for the first time. Tibby has gained confidence and made huge improvements to her behaviour with Charlie.

It has made a huge difference to be able to have our two collies out together, they also are fine when in the garden although Tibby does do her crouch position - and ends up getting a word from me to stop it.

If you have a dog with behavioural problems then it is often best to get professional help and also go to dog training classes. We have some dog trainers listed on this website, or simply ask your vet for a suggested dog trainer or dog training classes near you.

Never use any form of harsh punishment when training a dog. Clicker training and other non aggressive methods is best. Praise your dog for all good behaviour.
